Topography of architectural monuments of Tashkent

Research presentation
by Dona Kulmatova and Ulugbek Khaitov

Topography of Architectural Monuments of Tashkent: Chakar, Olmazor, and Ukchi mahallas use International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) methods and tools to research the 20th-century history and the making of those urban areas. Speakers Kulmatova and Khaitov shared their first-hand experiences with research design, fieldwork, archival research, and the use of analytical tools. They discussed contemporary mediation practices and the ethics of architectural valuation in city planning and design. This seminar was an opportunity to learn how open source maps, historic photographs and maps, and documenting mahallas’ streets and interior design today can contribute to the preservation of urban memory and cultural heritage.

Denkmaltopographie Taschkent (Topography of Architectural Monuments of Tashkent) is an international research and capacity-building project where German and Uzbek professionals and scholars share skills and knowledge in the area of culture and science. The project develops valuation and information inventory criteria for identified and potential architectural monuments in order to contribute to architectural heritage preservation in Uzbekistan.
